Animal Concern Latest News

APRIL 2007: The Scottish Executive are holding a public consultation into the Licences they issue to allow people to cull many species of birds. Animal Concern believes these Licences have been issued illegally for many years and the proposed changes will not alter that. You can find out more here.

MARCH 2007: Animal Concern has made a request under the Freedom of Information Act to try and find out how the misnamed “Scottish Seals Forum” was established. Read more about it here.

MARCH 2007: While the world is focused on the horrors of the Canadian seal hunt the Spring Animal Concern News shows how seals in Scottish waters are also being persecuted and killed. You can read that and other stories here

March 2007: The Westminster Government is proposing radical changes to the Freedom of Information Laws. These would introduce hefty charges, greatly reducing our ability to use these laws which have been very effective for us during the short time they have been in force. Read our submission here.

February 2007: Following the embarrassing but very welcome U-turn on hedgehog culling by Scottish Natural Heritage we have asked the First Minister to instigate an independent investigation into the management of SNH and their use of public funds. We are concerned at SNH giving public money to the Mar Lodge which is owned by the National Trust for Scotland who promote deer stalking and grouse shooting on the land. We also believe SNH are failing to police the issuing of licenses to cull birds. You can read our letter to Jack McConnell here.

February 2007: A pod of Orcas has been seen feeding in the Firth of Forth. It might be no more than a coincidence but this rare visit from these magnificent whales comes in the wake of news that seal numbers have collapsed in the whales’ usual feeding grounds around the Northern Isles.   We have asked Scottish Environment Minister Ross Finnie MSP to bring in an immediate ban on the shooting of seals around the Scottish coast. Find out more here.

January 2007:  Animal Concern’s membership is at its lowest number in over 100 years. Despite our appeal for new members at the end of 2005 numbers have continued to fall. We need more members if we are to survive in this our 131st of campaigning. If you are not a Member or Supporter please consider helping us by joining Animal Concern. You can print off a membership form or send an online donation here.

January 2007: The Scottish Parliament is considering establishing one or two Marine National Parks on the Scottish coast. We believe this is not enough to protect our fragile marine ecosystem. It’s a bit like asking a parent to pick their favourite child and leave the others to be neglected. In conjunction with the Save Our Seals Fund we have requested that Scotland’s entire coastal environment be protected. You can read what we have asked for here.

January 2007: The charity Enable Scotland has launched a fund-raising campaign aimed at persuading the public to fund their work rather than animal causes. Our Campaign Consultant is also Secretary to two animal charities and he spoke out in defence of the work of animal charities. You can read what he had to say here.

January  2007: We have recently responded to a Scottish Executive Consultation on whether or not to allow animals to be mutilated for various reasons. Naturally we oppose such cruelty but hold out little hope that the Executive will ban these practises. You can read our response here.

Animal Concern wants the use of snares totally banned. You can find out why by reading our submission here.
